1. Prepare and write GRE and TOEFL (the better the score the better your chances
at a good school).
2. Start research on which college has a good program. If you do not have relevant
background in your field of interest then some schools might make you take extra
credits.
3. If you are still studying and if you could write a paper and possibly get it
published it would be very good for your chances.
4. If you are going to be doing a lot of programming or something technical then
you should start looking online for open-source projects which are doing work similar
to what you wish to do; this sort of work really helps. Alternatively if you are
coming next year then you should get a job in a good company so you can have some
experience on paper. This really helps with on-campus jobs.
5. While researching for the program of your choice online, you will come across
websites that professors teaching those programs ask you to go through and read
their material. Get a feel for the subjects and the work needed.
6. While looking for colleges it is a good idea to look for schools which have good
public transportation (gas+ car will be expensive).
7. Check up on what kind of work you can get after you graduate. If you are into
research oriented fields, that kind of work requires a different kind of commitment
plus research requires serious effort in getting on board a research project with
a professor and writing publications.
8. The best way to research is to search on American job boards, hotjobs, monster
etc. Another approach is to try and connect with alumni of the American school where
you wish to go; this can be done via email or orkut and ask them about the program
and jobs.
9. After you list the final set of schools you can contact professors doing the
kind of work you are interested in.
10. Finally, you might also want to see how mature the industry is in India, it
is always a good hedge against a failing economy/ tight immigration rules. Better
opportunities could be available in emerging industries and universities in India
itself.
I can add more steps like this. But remember preparation is everything. All the
best.
