DR. SRIKANTA RAO ANCHALKAR

Dr. Srikanta Rao Anchalkar is a professor of Psychology and director of the Office of Institutional Analysis, Assessment and Evaluation at Tuskegee University, Alabama. He joined Tuskegee University in June, 1967 and since then has served the University in various leadership roles. His name is included in "Personalities of the South” (American Biographical Institute), "American Men and Women of Science” (Social and Behavioral Sciences), and in "Leaders in Education” (Jacques Cattle Press) for his outstanding achievement in education.

Dr. Rao was born on May 4, 1931 in Tumkur, Karnataka and completed his education with support from such great philanthropists and benevolent community leaders as K. H. Shama Rao and Sons of Bangalore and Sri Uttarkar Ramachandra Rao of Mysore. He is a graduate of University of Mysore, India, with B. A. (Honors) in Psychology in 1954, M.A. in 1956 and Ph. D. in 1965. He came to the United States in 1966 for post-doctoral studies accompanied by his wife, Jayalakshmibai, son Ravishankar and daughter Kavita. Completed his post-doctoral education at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo, Michigan. Mrs. Rao passed on in May 2002 after 48 years of wedded life. Both his children are well settled with their own families in Atlanta, Georgia and Huntsville, Alabama.

From his younger days Dr. Rao was of the firm view that all educated Bhavasars should set apart a portion of their time, money and energy for the sake of other Bhavasars. He chaired the Second All India Bhavasar Kshatriya Students and Educational Conference held in 1958 in Mysore as part of the 15th All India BK Conference. He has contributed financially to many social causes in Karnataka State—primarily in Mysore, Bangalore and Davanagere. In the sixties he was one of the key members in Mysore in organizing Mysore District Bhavasar Kshatriya Graduate Association. He helped financially for the construction of a classroom in a school building and also made arrangements for ongoing distribution of scholarship to the needy and deserving Bhavasar Kshatriya students. This association has now grown strong with a wide range of community services for children, elderly and women and is functioning as a central educational and social welfare organization in Karnataka State.

Dr Rao is actively involved in several social service initiatives at regional and national levels. He has liberally donated to the Karnataka Bhavasar Kshatriya Amruthanidhi Trust in Bangalore, to help poor widows in our community. Recently in 2004, he helped set up a new library in Davanagere, Karnataka for the benefit of medical students staying in a BK hostel. During his visit to India in 2005, he was honored by Karnataka State Bhavasar Kshatriya Yuvajana Mahasabha, Karnataka Bhavasar Kshatriya Amruthanidhi Trustees, and Dakshina Bangalore Bhavasar Kshatriya Samaj for his philanthropic and educational accomplishments.

Dr. Rao is greatly admired and respected in the Bhavasar community both here in the United States and in India for his services and love for other fellow human beings. These days he spends considerable time for the Art of Living Foundation, an international charitable organization founded by Sri Sri Ravi Shankar. At age 76 he is very active personally and professionally providing inspiration and guidance for the young and the old. May God bless him with health and peace in his life.
